Second light for Kwanzaa...
Hello and welcome to my blog today!
Today is the second day of Kwanzaa, a wonderful VALUES BASED holiday that I have enjoyed sharing in the past. The values of Kwanzaa are resonating so strongly for me as 2017 draws to a close, that I am returning to my blog to muse about these values, how they may have played out in my year or how I hope to embody them in 2018.
I hope you'll join me in these musings!
Today, the Kwanzaa value we are looking at is Self Determination...
Just what does Self Determination mean..?
- the process by which a country determines its own statehood and forms its own allegiances and government.
"the changes cannot be made until the country's right to self-determination is recognized"
- the process by which a person controls their own life
...'The process by which a person CONTROLS THEIR OWN LIFE'...Can you imagine such a thing?
For much of my youth, I didn't realize that I could have control over my own life, that I could choose to live differently than what was prescribed by society, but there was always one area in my life that I DID exercise some control and that was in my Creative Impulse.
Many people have been taught to give up their creative instincts and this is a terrible thing we do to our society as a whole. I often say that Creativity comes in MANY forms, but because Creativity has been so strongly tied to ARTISTIC ABILITY, many people 'think' they are not creative, and this simply isn't true.
Creativity can be found in gardening, making music, in baking or knitting, writing or dance, and sometimes it's found in looking at the world differently, but all of this takes TIME, PRACTICE and PATIENCE.
I exercised Self Determination when I made a decision to forge a career using my creative skills. Self Determination takes a lot of Self Discipline, which is a LEARNED HABIT or skill, much like Creativity. You get better at it with TIME, PRACTICE and PATIENCE.
It has not been easy, but it is getting easier as I find the tools, mentors and community I need to support my decision and to support my efforts. I really admire people who exercise their own Self Determination in their lives, and it inspires me to keep going, because if they can do it, I can do it too!
Having control over ones own life is a form of FREEDOM that not everyone understands, nor do they understand that it is possible to achieve such Freedom in their own lives, though they might be exercising it in one small area of their life today, just as I always did, with my Creativity.
How does Self Determination show up in your life? In what ares of your life do YOU exercise your Self Determination?? I'd love to hear more...
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and reading my musings - I hope you'll stay tuned for more musings on the values of Kwanzaa as I continue to write about it this week!
